IUD Tour

On June 5, 2024, Americans for Contraception placed a 20-foot IUD at Union Station to call attention to the senate vote on the Right to Contraception Act happening later that day. Unfortunately, almost every Republican senator helped defeat this simple bill that would have protected our right to birth control like the pill, IUDs, and Plan B.

The IUD, however, was a hit: Social media was buzzing and it was covered by major news outlets like the New York Times, lifestyle publications like Vogue, and talk television like The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and The View.

And so, Freeda (Womb) was born. Freeda empowers people to live their life however they want. She exists to remind people that their body and their choices are their own — no kids, no kids yet, no more kids, no period pain — doesn't matter to her what your reason is. She doesn't need to yell her message from the rooftops — if you know, you know. If you have no idea what she is — time to learn. Women don't talk about their IUD, and certainly not in public, so Freeda is standing up for herself, making herself known, and making sure if people come for her, she will be standing tall in defense of our freedoms.

Here's where the 20-foot IUD, Freeda (Womb), will be next:

Cedar Rapids

August 5: Freeda's next stop was the great state of Iowa, where she spent a sunny day in the park hanging with Iowans and making sure they know all about the Republican politicians who blocked the Right to Contraception Act at the state level and in the Senate. Freeda won't stand by as extremists try to strip us of our rights!

Chicago

August 1-4: Freeda spent the weekend in the Windy City to hang out near Lollapalooza, and fighting for our rights. Chicago showed up looking fabulous in their festival outfits to snap a pic, grab a postcard, and talk about why contraception is important to them.

Raleigh

July 25: Freeda popped up in North Carolina to hang out with her friends down south—and call out the politicians in Raleigh who blocked the Right to Use Contraception Act. She stood tall as Governor Cooper expanded access to contraception by making over-the-counter birth control free for Medicaid recipients in the state. On this stop, Freeda was reminded what a pro-birth control politician can do—and she made sure that North Carolinians know what is at stake.

Philadelphia

July 19: It's true what they say, it is always sunny in Philadelphia! Freeda enjoyed a sunny day in the city of brotherly love. Freeda's Philly pals came out to snap some pics and fight for our basic right to access reproductive healthcare. From City Hall to the Love Statue, Freeda had the chance to explore the city. And when you are 20 feet tall, you get the best views.

Virginia

July 16-17: Freeda heard that the Virginia governor vetoed the Right to Contraception Act so she showed up at Virginia Beach to protect our rights and soak up the sun. She then spent the day at Diversity Thrift in Richmond to raise awareness about the ongoing threat to reproductive rights. Plus, Freeda loves a good bargain!

Baltimore

July 12th: Freeda couldn't miss out on hanging out with all her friends at Netroots Nation so she made her way to Baltimore! She got to snap some selfies with the coolest young activists in town. In true Freeda form, she hit the waterfront after a hard day's work of fighting for our right to birth control.

Milwaukee

July 6th: Freeda rested up after Summerfest on the lake-side Milwaukee beaches! Wisconsin had the opportunity to pass the Right to Contraception Act in their state but Republicans in the legislature blocked it. Just listen to how Rep. Widgers talks about birth control! In Washington, Sen. Baldwin pushed to protect our rights, but Sen. Johnson was in lock step with other Republicans in the state. Freeda showed up in all her 20-foot glory to fight back.

Nashville

June 28-29: Freeda went to the country music capital of the world last week, where she had them dancing in the streets, demanding more, and (with a little help) assured the women of Nashville that no, if you have an IUD and you sneeze it won’t go flying out your. From nurse practitioners and soldiers to bros and bachelorettes, Freeda was the talk of the town.

St. Louis

June 26: Beneath the shadow of the gateway arch and the 20-foot IUD, Missourians expressed their concerns about politicians attacking their right to access birth control and IVF. Missouri's Senators in Washington, Josh Hawley and Eric Schmitt, voted against the Right to Contraception Act. The state legislature also blocked a similar bill earlier this year.

Tallahassee

June 24: After hitting Tampa and Orlando, Freeda took to the capital of the state to remind Floridians that Republican lawmakers blocked a state version of the Right to Contraception Act just a few months earlier. Paired with Sen. Scott and Sen. Rubio's no votes on the Senate bill, it is clear that the attacks on our birth control are a coordinated right-wing effort to undermine reproductive rights across the country.

Miami

June 18: Senate Republicans, including BOTH senators from Florida, torpedoed a bill that aimed to protect the right to birth control. So Freeda is holding them accountable and promoting access to reproductive health care—and making waves in the process.

Las Vegas

June 8: When you take a show on the road, where better to go than Fabulous Las Vegas! Donald Trump was holding a rally that very day in Vegas, just two weeks after he said he was "looking at" policies to restrict our right to birth control with a new plan we would find "interesting". 90% of Americans support the right to contraception—so we aren't interested in ANY roll back of our right to plan our families!

Washington, D.C.

June 5: This is where it all started.
